Frequently Asked Questions …
… and other things you might want to know about Cub Scouting with Pack 797.
Q: What do I need to buy?
Every scout needs a uniform and a handbook appropriate to his level (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos). Complete uniforms can cost about $100. Handbooks cost $4.50 to $7 depending on the level.
Be sure to ask one of the Scout Shop employees for help. They will know exactly what you need. You’ll need to know pant and shirt sizes, as well as your Den and Pack numbers. We’ll get you your Den number soon.

Be sure to tell them if you boy is a Tiger (1st grade), Wolf (2nd) Bear (3rd) or Webelos (4th and 5th grades). Each level has a different colored scarf. Tigers also have orange trimmed socks, rather than yellow for other Cub Scouts.
Tip: A lot of families like the two-for-one “switchback” pants. The legs zip off to become knee-length shorts.
Immediate recognition totes and earned badges are purchased by the Pack and awarded at the time the boy has earned them.
Q: Where can I buy these items?
The Scout Shop carries a complete set of uniform items and other scouting related items.

Q: What about camping?
We love it, and think it’s one of the best parts of the Scouting experience. The Pack has two camping trips planned this year, one in the fall and one in the spring.
If you plan on joining us, you should own or borrow a tent (with rain fly and ground cover), a good sleeping bag and basic camping supplies. There are several companies that sell quality camping gear, in stores and online. The Pack supplies cooking gear, and will organize the meals and food purchasing.
Both trips are “dump” camping. We park near the campsite and carry our gear a short distance to the campsite.
Safety, of course, is a top concern. Each trip will include at least one parent who has received Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation training. At the Cub Scout level, each boy must be accompanied by at least one parent or legal guardian.
Q: As a parent, how do I participate?
Cub Scouts is built around family activity, and we work hard to provide a great environment to spend time with your son. In Tiger Scouts (1st graders), a parent always participates with their boys at Den meetings, family activities and field trips called Go-See-Its.
At the Wolf, Bear and Webelos levels, parents are always welcome to participate in Den activities but are not required to. Whether you participate in the meetings or not, parents will need to help and guide their sons through Scouting. At every level, there are several achievements and electives that should be done in a family setting. Wolves, for instance, are asked to help plan and prepare a family meal.
We have a number of overnights planned, including the camping trips. As mentioned above, each boy must be accompanied by at least one parent or legal guardian on these trips.
Q: Do we have go on all the trips?
No, but we encourage you to participate fully in all that the Pack does. We think you and your son will have a richer experience if you do. Of course, we understand that there will be conflicts with sports and other activities.
Also, there are some events that you are welcome to attend but that the Pack has not made a part of its program this year. For instance, we choose to hold a Pack camping trip in the spring rather than participate in the District-sponsored Spring Family Campout. You are certainly welcome to do both.
Q: My son’s friend would like to join, but he doesn’t go to Mt. Bethel Elementary or belong to St. Peter and St. Paul church?
That’s not a problem. We would love to have him in our Pack.
Q: Can I volunteer?
Yes you can! The Pack cannot exist without the involvement of its parents. And there are plenty of ways to contribute, both big and small. The good news, no previous experience with Scouting is required at all. Most jobs are intuitive, plus the Atlanta Area Council offers a number of training opportunities.
Q: Are leaders trained?
Every leader is required to take two training courses – Youth Protection and New Leader Essentials. After that, there are a wide variety of training courses available – online, classroom and informal monthly roundtables – for those leaders who want it. We encourage our leaders, particularly those who work directly with the boys, to take additional training to become more effective in their roles.
Q: How does Pack 797 relate to the Boy Scouts?
Cub Scouting in general, and Pack 797 specifically, is part of Boy Scouts of America. Our pack is one of dozens of Cub Scout units in and around Atlanta offering elementary school-aged boys an opportunity to try new things and grow as individuals. The program we follow – from the ranks the boys earn to the training adult leaders take – was designed by BSA.
Q: Where does the Pack get its money?
The Pack gets its money from two sources – a portion of the dues our Scouts pay each year, and from our annual popcorn fundraiser.
During the year, we use the money to purchase badges and awards that your son earns, Pack 797 t-shirts and to defray the costs of many Pack events. We also pay the dues for every volunteer leader.
Q: How much are dues? What does it include?
Dues are $60 a year, paid in the fall. A portion of your dues – about $23 for most Scouts – support Boy Scouts of America at the local, regional and national levels and buys a subscription to Boy’s Life magazine. The rest goes to the Pack to support our programs.
For Scouts who are joining for the first time, a larger portion of your dues goes to the Boy Scout organization.
Q: When are the meetings?
We hold Pack meetings once a month, usually on the fourth Monday of each month. There are some exceptions, including the Pinewood Derby and Blue & Gold Banquet. The program guide has all the dates.
Den meetings are scheduled about twice a month by the Den Leaders.
Q: Where are the meeting held?
Our Pack meetings are held at St. Peter and St. Paul Episcopal Church on Johnson Ferry Road. Den meetings are usually held at the Den Leader’s home, or the home of one of the Den’s members. Each Den takes frequent field trips.
Q: Does my son have to wear the uniform?
Yes. The "Class A" uniform with its rank badges and other insignia are an important part of the Scouting tradition. We also have a Pack t-shirt – the "Class B" uniform - that will be appropriate for some events.
Q: Are the Cub Scouts a religious organization?
Scouting is not affiliated with any religion. In fact, Scouting in this country includes members of over 30 different religions. That said “Duty to God” is a basic value of Scouting. The Scouting program encourages religious faith in the same way it encourages good citizenship and community service.
